Wireless Surfing/DNS Issues

Due to a routing issue in Marble Falls, some customers in Blanco and the surrounding areas may not be able to surf. This is due to bad DNS (domain name server) settings. If you are using the old DNS server IPs (204.96.220.x) this needs to be changed to the new DNS server IPs (72.48.243.7 & 72.48.243.10). Please click here for full instructions

Great News from Momentum

Greetings,

We are pleased to bring you some exciting news.

Momentum Online and TSTAR Internet of Marble Falls have joined forces with ERF Wireless, Inc of League City Texas. With support of the ERF Wireless team behind us we will be able to improve our services on all levels. Over the next few weeks, we will be integrating the Momentum network and operations with ERF Wireless and TSTAR Internet. The combination of these three strong companies will enhance reliability, offer new services, and ensure professional Internet access and technology for the Texas Hill Country.

The current Momentum offices are to become the headquarters for ERF Wireless operations in Central Texas. Although some things will be changing, such as our billing address and tech support contact information, the Momentum team you have come to know over the years will still be here to serve you. You may still walk in and be served by Sheri, Janet, Mike, Scott and the rest of the crew. I will also be in our Blanco offices and am proud to hold the position of Chairman and CEO of ERF Central Texas Operations.

We will be announcing changes in our procedures as they take place during the integration of our operations, but we are committed to make this transition as easy as possible for our users. This is an exciting time for us at Momentum. We are thrilled to be part of the ERF Wireless family, and are pleased to be able to bring you the very best Internet access and Networking services available. Feel free to contact us directly should you have any questions or concerns.

Spam Attack Update

Spam volumes set an all-time high in June, when volumes grew 51% since January 2007. In July, spam volumes dropped slightly. However, over 91% of all incoming email remains junk messages. Spammers are launching these massive attacks through the use of botnets — networks of compromised computers infected by hackers.

Spam All-Time High

We also observed a significant jump in our blocking of messages with attached PDF and Excel files containing the spam "pitch." This is the result of a new tactic, in which spammers embed spam content in legitimate file types, such as .zip files and Excel files.

Image spam decreased from about 35% to about 25% of all junk messages. In terms of the total amount of spam, the use of PDF and Excel files has somewhat offset the decrease in image spam.

Spam Volume

Virus Threat Update

July was the most active month for virus attacks in over two years. During a major attack from July 2-9, Postini tracked and blocked over 123 million virus-infected messages for customers. The volume of virus-infected messages was over three times larger than any attack over the past two years.

On July 16th, a new attack began that was still underway at the time of this report. Over half a billion virus-infected messages have been sent during the course of this attack, making it over 14 times larger than any attack in the past two years.

July Virus Attacks

These virus attacks are mutations of the "Storm" malware code family, which harvests computers into botnets. The "blended-attack" messages contain URLs to hacked websites that deliver the malware to the target computer. If a user clicks the link, this can secretly install a generic software downloader that allows hackers to download more malware to the user's system.

We see the hacker/spammer community rapidly evolving and specializing in delivering virus threats through email; botnets have become a commoditized resource that is available for rent. Botnets send virus-infected messages, which in turn harvest more computers into the spammer network. Botnets are largely responsible for constantly increasing spam volumes, image spam, and now PDF spam.

Spam Update

During this first quarter of 2007, spam attacks continued rising to unprecedented levels. The volume of spam is up over 25% since January 1, 2007. Momentum Email Security service continued to perform effectively by blocking over 99.7% of the spam emails sent to clients. However, the increasing volume and the changing tactics of the spammers mean that some clients may see a small number of messages that evade initial detection. Momentum is dedicated to constantly monitoring incoming spam, and we respond rapidly by analyzing threats and updating our filters. Spam Hits All-time Highs in February 2007
